Garland helps with Herriman UT, Machine Gun Fire

Posted by admin on September 24, 2010 under Main

Garland was asked to send a structure engine and the personnel to man the truck down to Herriman to help with the Machine Gun fire which started Sunday afternoon Sept 19th.  Garland sent Engine 41 with six firefighters.  The crew was assigned a patrol roll around the homes closest to the fire, and make sure no hot spots reignited close to the homes.  We had crews down for almost 50 hours before we were demobilized from the event.  It was at that point the Incident commanders felt the fire was no longer a threat to the homes.   Roughly 1600 homes were evacuated at the highest point.  Three homes were lost in the blaze, but after seeing the fire line first hand,  it was amazing that more homes were not destroyed.  The crews that were on the fire initially did an incredible job of stopping the fire.

There were huge amounts of  resources from all over the state and country to aid in the fire.  A call was made out to Box Elder County for help early Monday morning.  Box Elder County as a whole responded swiftly by providing structure engines and crews from Garland, Tremonton, Brigham City, Corrine and Honeyville and one Brush Truck from the county itself.

For more information on the fire, you can check out the link here from KSL.

Another Salmon Fry in the Books!

Posted by admin on June 7, 2010 under Main

That’s right – #33 is over and done and being counted as another successful year!  We had over 3200 people come through the station to collect their salmon dinner this year.  I think those who made it this year can attest, we have found a way to improve the salmon fry after all these years.  There is less waiting than ever with an improvement we finished just in time for last year’s feast.  Once things got rolling, we got reports that people didn’t wait much more than 20 mins.  Much of the time the take-out line had no wait at all!

We can’t thank all our families, friends and volunteers that came out this year to give of their time to help us out.  In our planning stages it looked like we were going to be a little short on help this year.  Thank you, thank you thank you for your help!  You know who you are and we appreciate your support more than you will know.  To the vendors; Kent’s Market, Harris Market, Rupps, JC’s Dinner.  We also thank you for your help over the years to make this a success each and every year.  It wouldn’t be possible without your help and generosity.  Most of us are off to the State Fire Convention this week.  When we get back I will make sure to update this list of supporters.

The Garland Fire Department is on a very limited budget.  Matter of fact, our annual budget allows for very little, if any new equipment.  That is obtained through grants, donations and the monies raised through the Salmon Fry.  As pointed out at a display we had at the event.  It requires just under $10,000 just to train a firefighter and outfit them in the most basic of personal protective gear.  As budgets get tighter and tighter it gets very difficult sometimes to make sure a firefighter has a set of turnouts that are not torn or out dated.  Though the support of those who make it out to the Salmon Fry, we able to ensure our firefighters are safe.  And that we can carry out our mission to the citizens of Garland and surrounding Box Elder County:  To protect property and help save lives.

We hope to see everyone next year.  Plan now – the Salmon Fry is always the first Saturday in June – always!

Thanks again for your support!

Training Opportunity for Garland City Fire Department

Posted by admin on May 15, 2010 under Main

So practice makes perfect as they say.  An early Saturday morning the Garland Fire Department was given a chance to train a little and help out a east Garland resident.  On 14400 N a resident was had a case of out with the old and in with the new.  They were ridding their lot of an old home with a bad foundation to make room for a new home construction.  Always willing to ‘play’ and do some training, we made arrangements to help take the house down with fire.  We extended the offer to do some training by inviting our neighboring departments Tremonton and Fielding.  We also asked Corrine FD to bring down their big water tender and help with house roasting.  All a precaution because the closest water hydrant was at the East Garland Park.

We started out the day starting some small fires in the home.  This builds up a lot of smoke and some fire, but it allows us to train on our interior attacks safely.  While we had a lot of smoke built up in the home, we also took the chance to practice some victim searches and evacuations.  Something that can never be practiced enough!  Getting the chance to do some live fire training is priceless.  Burning down just about any old structure is also very beneficial for future fires.  The firefighters can watch and study how the fire works and see how things evolve though out the life of the fire since we don’t have to put this fire out.  This teaches us how a fire might travel through a structure to be better prepared for future structure fires.

Once the training was complete and we started the house on fire for the final time, it took roughly 1 hour for floors and all 4 walls and a roof to all come down.  Here are a few of the images from the day’s events.  If it looks like the fire was a little warm – it was.

It’s getting close to that time of the year again. That one weekend that Garland actually has lines forming for something! That’s right – the annual Garland Fire Department Salmon Fry will be here before you know it. Saturday, June 5th is the day to mark on your calender. We start serving at 3pm. We finish up at 9pm. If you haven’t been in a couple years, things are different. The lines move faster than ever with our recent fire department renovation that was finished up just before the event last year. We won’t lie to you – there is some waiting, but not like there has been years prior. We have more room for people to stay and eat at the gym and enjoy the all you can eat option. We have improved the take out line, so there is minimal waiting for some great food not to mention it all goes to a great cause.

Garland FD take fire prevention on the road!

Posted by admin on April 25, 2010 under Main

On Wednesday, April 21 a few members from the Garland Fire Department and the Box Elder County fire marshal, Greg Martz, took the state smoke trailer and headed out west. We visited with kids at Snowville, Park Valley and Grouse Creek schools to talk about fire prevention/safety and let them experience the state’s smoke trailer. We talked with the kids on what to do during a fire, lessons on when and how to call 911 and a little bit about wildland urban interface awareness. The kids took turns trying on turnout gear and getting a little bit of an idea what it’s like to walk in a firefighter’s boots. The firefighters that went had a great time, as the kids welcomed us with lots of questions and smiles despite the gloomy, rainy weather. It sure looked liked the kids has a lot of fun also.

They all got a chance to go through the smoke trailer as well. The trailer is full of lessons on fire safety. How to be safe in all around the home to include in the kitchen with small kids around and what a smoke detector sounds like even. A few kids even to make a practice call to 911! The best part was when they all gathered in a bedroom setting and the room filled with smoke. The kids were all taught to stay calm and how to exit their room when they can’t get out their door. The children all did great by remaining calm and climbing out an available window. The kids were treated to all kinds of prizes by the time it was all over. Thanks kids for the warm welcome we’ll see you next year.

Fire prevention lessons are an important part of any fire department’s job. If you would like the Garland Fire Department to visit your school or organization just get in touch with us. Or, with a little planning any group or organization, young or old, will be more than welcome to come by our station for a tour.
